My iPod screen is blank?

About half a year ago when my video iPod was 6 months old I tried to turn it on and it wouldn't respond. Out of desperation I've been recently trying to get it going again but have had no luck. Please don't tell me to try the help apple provides, as it doesn't work. There is no possibility of taking it back as it was bought in the states and I'm living in the UK. I also don't have a warranty on it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
